Born in the UK, Kate completed a BA with Honours from University of Oxford 2004 before completing a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery MBChB from University of Manchester Medical School in 2010. Further studies include an MA from University of Oxford in 2011 and in 2015, a Diploma of Child Health, University of Sydney. In 2017, Dr Drinkwater also completed a Diploma in Palliative Care.

She worked as an intern at Stepping Hill Hospital in the UK, before arriving in Australia in 2012 where Kate has continued her training, completing rotations at the Mt Isa Base Hospital in Queensland and in South Australia at the Queen Elizabeth and Modbury Hospitals.
